I had a chance of visiting DNS yesterday because a friend had mentioned it since I (like a lot of mothers of 5th graders in Durham) am looking to alternatives to the DSA's war over who gets to be the lucky ones from the "famous" Durham Public School lottery. Boy, was I surprisingly shocked by what I saw.

I thought I was going to be there for maybe 30 minutes, enough time to ask a few questions, put my curiosity to rest and maybe if I am lucky, I might leave with an application since I had no illusion a tuition free private school can be that promising. Almost 2 and half hours later, all I could think of was "what do I need to do to get my child accepted" and I was closed to begging them to please get him in but I tried to present myself half way professional and leave the begging for my next visit. Since I came home, I had called about 5 other parents that I know with 5th grade boys that share my values in education and kids that I know would be a great fit for such a wonderful program because after all, I want the best for my child including those that he will interact with in and outside of the classroom.

To be honest, I just read the blog by Mr Lawson and I so can relate to what he said. I felt like this school is the best kept secret of Durham and I will be lucky to have my child attends his middle school, assuming that he will get accepted. I guess the only thing left for me is to just get started on the application.

I just would like to say "Thank you" to Dr. Vennelle and Ms Medlock for taking over 2 hours to speak with me, answer all my questions and really giving me hope of getting my child the education that he deserves.

The government, federal and state, now spends an average of nearly $10,000 per student a year. Meanwhile, the average cost of tuition for both elementary and secondary private schools is less than $4,000 a year. Why not just give every public school student a school voucher of $4,000 so they can go to a private school? We'd save money, but best of all our children would be getting a much better education at schools like Durham Nativity School.

Wow, this seems like an amazing school! I'd love to read some follow-up posts when you visit again. I didn't realize that a school could be run just off donations-- what a great idea.

Ron Paul has sponsored a bill in Congress called the Education Improvement Tax Cut Act, which would allow individuals to deduct from their taxes I think up to $5,000 that they donate to any school, public or private, for scholarships or any academic reasons, in the United States. The Durham Divinity School should certainly be aware of this legislation and try to get it passed. It would be very helpful to schools like this, and to public schools as well.

It's always so nice to hear about a school that is actually teaching its students what will truly be expected of them when they go out into the real world. Good manners, as well as the three R's. Thanks for bringing light to this wonderful school.
